Made Righteous

He made the one who did not know sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God (2 Corinthians 5:21, CSB).

For years, it was hard for me to comprehend my identity as the righteousness of God. Honestly, it felt impossible. My background of sin, abuse, and shame felt like too much for God to forgive or set me free from.

Perhaps that’s how you feel today. Maybe your past feels so barren and broken you wonder how you can move forward.

After I received Jesus as my Lord and Savior, I remember constantly saying aloud and under my breath, “I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.” I wrote it in my journal. I noted it in the margins of my Bible. I placed it on sticky notes. I did everything I could to get that pivotal truth into my heart. And gradually, it happened. But to this day, I have to keep declaring it to myself.

Perhaps that’s something we all need to do. When we not only know who we are but also whose we are, we won’t let our identity be formed by the world around us but by God within us. And that changes everything for the better!
